The Path of Knowledge and importance of GURU

My prostrations to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswathi and to the lineage of Gurus.

सदाशिव समारम्भां शंकराचार्य मध्यमं अस्मिन आचार्य पर्यन्तं वंदे गुरु परमपरं ।

From that part of Brahman or the Consciousness which had creative urge came the Lord of Creation Eswara. HE created this entire creation at all the 3 levels Causal,Astral and Physical, with his mere thought and through his own consciousness and maya. Hence he is omnipresent as witness consciousness. Our perceptions towards this dual world as good/evil, virtue/sin, happiness/suffering, birth/death etc, in short all the so called confusion is HIS own creation. The energy behind every action, desire and thought comes from HIM. HE is uneffected by MAYA as well as his own creation because of the same reason that he is both in the cause as well as effect. He is the infinite consciousness or the substratum for this entire creation. HE exists in everyone and every where, in fact he alone exists. By the power of his Maya he created innumerous bodies trapping consciousness with Maya (ignorance) and with various layers of matter. As the Great Master Swami Chinmaya points:

ॐ ----------- Vasanas--------------- B(body) M(mind) I (intellect)

Om (Consciousness) trapped in Vasanas (deep rooted desires) and Agnana (Ignorance) Create the equipment of Buddhi (Intellect), Manas (mind) and physical Body.

In this entire scheme of things Agnana(ignorance) which is a product of maya (this maya too came from eswara)plays a very vital role by assuming a seperate existence of this instrument of Body, Mind and Intellect from the source i.e Eswara. This alone is the cause for dualism and ourselves thinking to be different from eswara. This ignorance is the major cause for getting ourselves attached into cause and effect (Karma), due to ignorance alone we attach ourselves with the sense of doership and think ourselves as seperate entities from Eswara. But the real source for all actions and inactions- beings and matter is Eswara.
When Eswara saw his own creation of which each and every atom is made of his own self is claiming its own identity and aloofness from the source and getting deluded as a result of dualism, HE decided to teach the truth and give knowledge. HE became the first Guru with a mission to dispell ignorance and instill knowledge. The word Guru means dispeller of ignorance or darkness in Sanskrit.
So, my first prostrations to Lord Eswara in the form of Sada (ever) Shiva (Auspiciousness) who became the first Guru and through generations taken the form of a lineage of Gurus.
My prostrations to the great proponent of monoism Bhagawan Adi Shankaracharya, who wrote commentaries on Prasthana Trayi i.e Upanishads, Brahmasutras and Bhagawad Geetha and various Prakarana Granthas (Introductory texts) and composed stotras. In a nut shell was a great missionary who brought back the path of knowledge for masses in darkness and ignorance. The great master say in one of his introductory texts Atma Bodha(knowledge of self)- even if you employ an army to take out darkness from a dark room, the army will not succeed, all you need is to light a candle which brings light into the room. Similarly whatever you do in the name of rituals will not take you back to the source, knowledge alone can dispell ignorance. The knowledge that your that Brahman (consciousness) and you already are that Self will lead to the path of light. So self realisation is not searching for something that is not with your self but doing away with every thing and following the inward path with the help of Jnana (knowledge) coupled with Discrimination (between real and unreal) and Vairagya(dispassion as all these problems came out of vasanas) leads to self realisation.
Our Sanatana Dharma (I will not get caught in terming Hinduism) instructs 3 fold path for self realisation SRAVANA (listening to the scriptures from Guru) MANANA(contemplation on what you have heard from Guru) and NIDIDHYASANA (meditation and abidance in truth).
Hence the importance of Guru. Who takes from darkness towards light. We attach great reverence to Gurus Padukas(feet) which is a symbolism for principles on which he/she stands for and our devotion in following his path is the real Pada Seva or puja.
My salutations to Guru tatwa.
Hari Om!
May peace be to all.
With Love
Gopi
